In 2012, these vehicles made up 16% of new private vehicle sales, and that figure grew to 59% in 2022. In 2022, 15% of all new car sales were fully battery electric (Figure 11.3). In 2022, there were approximately 72,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric cars, which was approximately 37% of the Climate Action Plan target for 2025. By the end of 2023, this number had increased to over 121,000 electric vehicles (EVs), accounting for 62% of the Climate Action Plan target for 2025.
